Privacy Policy

I take your privacy seriously and only collect what I need to respond to you. This policy explains what that means in practice.

Who I am

Observable Labs is a sole proprietorship operated by Jonathan La in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. You can reach me at jon@observablelabs.ca for any privacy question, including to act as the privacy contact under PIPEDA and Quebec's Law 25.

What I collect

The only personal information this site collects is what you choose to send me through the contact form: your name, your email address, and the content of your message. The site itself does not set cookies, and I do not currently run third-party analytics.

How I collect it

The contact form is handled by Netlify Forms. When you submit it, your message is transmitted over HTTPS and stored in my Netlify account so I can read and reply to it. Netlify also processes standard server logs (such as IP addresses) for security and abuse prevention.

Why I collect it and how I use it

I use the information you send me only to respond to your inquiry and, if we end up working together, to communicate about that engagement. I do not add you to a marketing list, sell your information, or share it with anyone except the service providers listed below.

Who else touches your information

  • Netlify, Inc. — hosting and form processing. Netlify operates infrastructure in the United States, which means your submission may be processed and stored outside Canada and may be subject to US law.
  • My email provider — used to read and reply to your message.

I do not use advertising trackers, social pixels, or third-party analytics on this site. If that ever changes, I will update this policy before turning anything on.

How long I keep it

I keep contact form submissions for up to two years from our last exchange, then delete them. If we sign an engagement, related correspondence may be kept longer for tax and professional records (typically seven years, per Canadian record-keeping norms).

Your rights

You can ask me to access, correct, or delete the personal information I hold about you, and you can withdraw consent for me to keep using it. Email jon@observablelabs.ca and I will respond within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with my response, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada at priv.gc.ca, or, if you are in Quebec, the Commission d'accès à l'information.

Visitors from outside Canada

If you are visiting from the EU, UK, or elsewhere with stronger privacy laws, the rights described above apply to you as well, and you can exercise them by emailing me directly.

Security

I rely on reputable providers (Netlify, my email host) and standard measures like HTTPS. No system is perfect, but I will notify affected individuals and the relevant regulator if I become aware of a breach involving your information.
